Whether it’s fall leaf season, spring garden prep, or yard work any time of year, I always keep my Razor-Back 24-Tine Steel Leaf Rake close at hand. There’s nothing revolutionary about it—spring-tine rakes have been around for a hundred years—but, in my 40-plus years of raking leaves, I have not used a better one.
The rake head features 24 tines formed from a single piece of steel, supported by a flexible dual steel coil spring assembly. The fiberglass handle includes a 9-inch cushioned grip at the top. The tines measure 24 inches wide at the widest point, and the rake measures 68 inches from the tine tips to the top of the handle. It weighs 2.5 pounds.

The tine count is a key detail. Most steel rakes this size only have 22 tines. The two “extra” tines on this rake improve durability by spreading the workload. In a side-by-side comparison with a 22-tine rake, I also found that the spring mechanism on the Razor-Back had stronger forward pressure, which helps push heavier loads of leaves and debris.
Razor-Back offers the same rake head on a wood handle for those who prefer it. The wooden ones may weigh a little less, but I prefer fiberglass. Mine has stayed smooth after years of work. The wooden ones I’ve had over the years became rough and brittle after two or three seasons.
Over the years, I have used lots of other leaf rakes made of plastic, steel, bamboo, and whatever else. This one is better. The shape of the tines resists clogging fairly well, and when it does clog, the clog releases easily. I just flip the rake over and “wipe” them off on the grass. Since the tines are solid, instead of inserts, there is no risk that they will fall out, and they don’t break off like plastic and bamboo.
The Razor-Back 24-Tine Steel Leaf Rake is a well-made, durable tool that works well for all kinds of yard work. It offers a good combination of light weight and durability—I can rake leaves all day in the fall and not worry about breaking it or being sore the next day. The grip makes it comfortable and easy to control. Best of all, the price is competitive, and it comes with a lifetime warranty.
