live in New England now. I grew up in the Midwest. I see a lot of front doors painted red here. The red door can completely clash with the other exterior colors; homeowners still paint the doors red. Why is this? What tradition does this follow? Our home has a used-to-be-red front door. It is now (you guessed it!) PINK. Why do people deliberately do this? I want to paint my front door but am curious about this tradition before I paint it the shutter color

I don't know the origin, but I had an old timer who was a painter tell me that the red door signifies that the house is paid for - no longer under mortgage and so a sign of pride.

Excellence is its own reward!

Well, guess this means I definitely ought to change the color of the front door. :-) Thanks for the explanation!

seems to me the door should be red when you have the mortgage since you are "in the red"
