We are renovating our can tell that back around 1982, someone really tried to fix it up. We have textured ceiling EVERYWHERE. Is there any way to get rid of the stuff? I guess I'm hoping for some solution that doesn't involve tearing it all out, or spending a month with a sanding block. I don't really have the room for a dropped ceiling.

Just wishing...

Thank you.

Is it the spray on popcorn type or the rolled and stippled drywall mud?

If its the popcorn type a flat sharp mud knife and elbow grease to scrape it off.Messy job, no way around it. Where the drywall joints are ,it will take some sanding afterward and possible some new mud touchup.

If its the rolled mud and textured brush type finish you dont have much choice but maybe knockdown worst of it with a wide knife and use another whole layer of drywall on top and start from scratch.
