I am now the proud owner of a 100 yr old house. I have been renovating the kitchen myself. Originally, I thought I would pull up the vinyl tile hoping I would find planks which I would paint. Alas, there is linoleum under the vinyl tile and that is glued onto a subfloor. I tried peeling up a small patch and it would be hopeless! I now have to decide what to put over the ugly tile. There is a significant slope in the back of the room -- back baseboard is about 5 inches lower that front of room. All the doors and windows were framed around this slope, btw. So there is no shoring up the back of the room and probably no realistic way to level. Given this, should I stay away from laminates? If I go with vinyl tile, what do I have to do to prep the old tile to assure adherence?
