It’s a truth universally acknowledged that mosquitoes make spending time outdoors nearly unbearable. Some places are harder hit than others, but none more so than a few select cities, according to Orkin. The pest control company released its list of the most mosquito-infested places in America, based on its data. Where does your city fall on the list? Also in today’s news digest: the toilet flower trend, the ‘loneliest color’, a laundry hack experts are warning against, and Dyson’s new ultra-thin vac.

Mosquito Misery Highest in Los Angeles for the 4th Year in a Row

What do Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York have in common? Other than being major U.S. cities, they’re the top three most mosquito-infested places in the United States, according to Orkin. Orkin released its report just in time for summer, and its rankings are based on the number of new residential mosquito treatments performed by the company from April 2024 to March 2025. Atlanta and Detroit round out the top five most infested areas. Some notable changes on the list include Cleveland’s ranking, which rose 10 spots; Indianapolis and Oklahoma City each rose 12 spots; Pittsburgh rose 16; Richmond, Virginia and Tulsa, Oklahoma, each rose 17 spots. Several cities are new to the list: Flint, Michigan; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Columbia, South Carolina; Augusta, Georgia; Myrtle Beach, South Carolina; and Davenport, Illinois. People living in these places may want to research how to most effectively get rid of and prevent mosquitoes before they swarm in full force this summer, especially with West Nile cases detected in Illinois, Arizona, and others. See the full ranking here.

Toilet flowers are the newest decorating trend to transform bathrooms, and we can’t say it’s the most practical one. It’s also not what you may think: instead of placing flowers on top of the toilet tank, the trend consists of flowers being placed inside the tank. But we wouldn’t recommend following this trend, as it can negatively affect your plumbing. Real or not, see it here.

Sherwin-Williams just named a shade of lilac the “Loneliest Color” of 2025. The honor has nothing to do with the color itself, but with the amount of the color the company sold in 2024. Specifically, its “Radiant Lilac” hue was the least-tinted one of last year, and there were less than 1,000 gallons of Radiant Lilac made.

People are apparently freezing their laundry detergent before using it. In an attempt to DIY less environmentally-friendly detergent pods, many are freezing laundry detergent in silicone molds. But experts warn that doing this may make your detergent less effective due to liquid separation and chemical breakdown with temperature changes.

Dyson unveiled its newest product: an ultra-skinny stick vacuum that’s reportedly as skinny as one of its hair dryers. It’s also ultralight, weighing just four pounds. The PencilVac doesn’t seem like it should be powerful, but it will use the company’s smallest and fastest vacuum motor to date. It’s expected to be released in the United States in 2026.
