I am finishing my basement and I am somewhat confused. The distance from the ceiling rafters and the concrete floors is 101.5". According to this, I will be required to get 2x4x10 in order to make it work. Would it be possible to add an additional soleplate at the top so I can user 2x4x8? Thanks!

I think you could add sole plate or top plate.

I wouldn't recommend going all the way to the joists. Differential settling could be a problem. You don't want the weight of the house sitting on a stud wall you tossed up.

Where will your ceiling be? If you use a drop ceiling (suggested so you can get to pipes etc. without destroying ceiling) then you may not need to go all the way to the joists with the wall. Besides you'll be using drywall in 4 ft lengths. You want a board to support the edge with.
