We are looking to put vinyl windows in but unsure which way to go. We were told we could put new thermopane windows into the existing sashes - however that will still leave us with storm windows and screens on the outside. If we remove the sashes and the storm windows and put in replacement windows with screens, what happens with the excess depth (are the windows placed more towards the front of the opening? We also have existing aluminum facing on the outside trim work so will that have to be replaced? We want to go with the best and most efficient system.

I think you would be happier with a total replacement in the long term... sash and frame. If it is a matter of expense just do a few at a time. We replaced steel casements on two homes with vinyl (cheap ones the first time, top of the line on the second). Both were satisfactory.
