I have a floor lamp that has a wired dimmer switch that sits on the floor. It is not working and I would happily cut it off and just put a new plug (with or without an on/off switch)on the end. What do I need to do? I am very much a novice at this!

It's tough to give you advice without being able to see exactly what you have.
You can buy replacement plugs at the hardware store. Cut the wire off right before the switch. Take the cutoff to the hardware and they can get the plug for that size wire.
They can also explain the process to replace.
Hope this helps
