Our house was built in 1939. When built they attached a small garage at ground level. Previous owners made it into a bedroom and laundry room. The step down into the area is off the kitchen. The stairs in this area are over the crawl space opening. They are removable. They need to be replaced. I know that more support is needed. Previously there were only 2 steps. One normal step and one deep step, which did not overlap onto the floor. Should I make it with 2 steps as before or use 3 steps with the lower 2 removable and should I bring it out over the subfloor? I have included a picture. The distance from the kitchen floor to the subfloor is 21 1/4in. I appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks.
