I have a smell in one of my bed rooms and the source is undetectable. My family and I just moved in to the house about 3 weeks ago. The smell was not present before we moved in, and prior to moving in the entire house was freshly painted and the carpets were shampooed. Those related smells have been gone.

I have been in both the crawl space and the attic to see if that is where the smell is coming from. It is not. The smell resembles something rotting, i.e. food/cabbage. The smell is only coming from the register in my son's room. The duct is run in the attic and the register vents are in the ceiling. I have disconnected the section of duct, about 10 feet long, inserted a large flash light and then removed the register cover at the other end and looked into the duct with a mirror. I was expecting to find a rodent dead, but it was clean as can be. The rest of the house is free of the smell, but it is clearly coming from around the ceiling in that room.

What could this be, and where is it coming from. This is driving us crazy. HELP!

I don't know the answer, but can appreciate the problem. We had a dead "something" in a wall after hearing scratching noises for a day or so. I never found precisely where it was, but the smell - mainly in a closet - went away in a couple of weeks. Chances are, yours will too.

Hi, I agree that it may be a dead "something". If you believe it is coming from above - remember bats can squeeze into VERY small places, so there may be a dead one there, and you may not be able to locate it. Also I am wondering perhaps it can be some kind of animal urine that had penetrated the wood... when the attic/ceiling or heat duct warms up, it activates the smell. good luck, I hope the smell disappears soon!
