My house is about 60 yrs old. new owner, new roof, new chimney cap. I have water stains on my ceiling (about 18 inches out from the wall) and stains from the ceiling to the mantle. The flashing is new too. So the prime suspect is the aging brick. It is an exterior chimney. the guy that inspected it when we bought the house (1.5 yrs ago) said its good to burn. after one fireplace use the house smoked up. So it needs to be swept. But why the leaking? The inspector offered to point tuck the bricks but I don't sant him back after the house filled with smoke. So point tuck or seal? Thanks.
