I want to take out my chimney in the basement only. My house was built around 1915 the chimney is brick about 25" wide x 16" deep. I was thinking about taking out some bricks at the top where it meets the floor joists then sliding in some 2x4s or 2x6s then support them with 2x4s or 2x6s down to the floor, then I could remove the rest of the bricks and put in a steel plate screwed to the joists supported by a steel column to the floor. Would this work? Also when you start removing the bricks does the chimney start falling down all throught the house immeditatly? Any help with this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Al

Not a good idea. The masonry is too heavy to support in this manner while you dismatel it from the bottom. This is a disaster waiting to happen. Remove it all from the top down.

is there no other way to remove a chimney other than from the top down? no way to leave the part that goes through the roof in there so hole and shingles don't have to be messed with? thanks for any input :-)

To do what you are suggesting would be difficult, unsafe for workers without the proper safety training, and cost well in excess of what you would pay to take it down and patch the roof. This would by NO MEANS be a do-it-yourself project. Holes would need to be cut through the masonry, temporary steel bracing installed and supported (possibly all the way to the ground depending on the size of the load above), and permanent supports would need to be installed after the demolition is finished to hold up the remaining masonry above.
