New furnace quotes
I just got two quotes to replace my old 75yr old furnace. Both quotes specify a Weil-MacLain SGO-4 furnace, combustion kit (to get air from the outside... will be finishing basement soon) and a 40gal indirect hot water heater. The only difference between to two quotes is the brand of Indirect hotwater heater. One is a Weil-MacLain Gold 40gal and the other is a 40gal MegaStor. Oh.. the last difference is the price... One quote is $7292 w/ WM gold and the other is $6140 w/ MegaStor. Now obviously I am going to try to get the higher price down... but are the two indirect heaters comparable? I want to stay with my current oil supplier and get them to meet the lower priced quote(The current oil supplier provided the $7292 quote with 12months 0% financing.) Failing a new quote price, I will just go with the lower one if the water heaters are comparible. Is the price fair? Each includes all permits, wiring, plumbing and removal of the old. (An asbestos contractor has to strip it prior to anywork so that is a constant given.)
I've installed many of the weil mclain boilers and a few of the indirect water heaters over the years so I am familiar with these products. Functionally it is a decent boiler but it is a unit that very much hate to see when I find one that needs to be cleaned.I'm not certain about the recent models of weil mclain indirect tanks but I personally stopped using them because they not only had a plastic casing but the actual tank itself was made of plastic and very thin plastic. I was adding a zone to a house one day and my coworker got careless with his torch. He burned a hole in the WM tank. It was then that I realized they weren't well made. I would go with the mega store or a super stor. Do you have gas or oil? If you have oil I would strongly recommend checking a quote to install an Ultimate boiler, one of my favorites. The mega store is a good tank though. as was already mentioned it is made of stainless steel. What area do you live in? This will give me a better idea on the estimate you were given.
