i've got a 30 space 150amp main breaker in my house with 6-15amp breakers...8-20amp breakers...3-30amp double breakers...1-40amp double breaker...and 1-50amp double breaker for the electric heat.i have 6 spaces left on my main and i want to install a 70amp double pole breaker and run a feed to my detached garage about 55 feet away to a subpanel.will the main handle the 70amp breaker. i have a hot water heater,dryer,range,a/c unit,and electric heat.i need the 70amp because i have a 220 welder that i plan on using in the garage,plus have some lights and recepticles.

You've given us very little electrical information to go on. In order to do the calculation, you'll have to tell us the load in either wtts, volt-amps or amps for those pieces of equipment. Also needed, how many square feet is your house.

With that info, maybe someone will volunteer to do the calculation. If not, go by your local library & see if they have a copy of the National Electrical Code. There are examples in the appendix as to how to do the calculation.

At a guess, with the equipment you've mentioned, your service may be too small.
