Hey, I don't know anything about roofing so please help me. We are in the process of getting our new roof completed. Due to hurricane Lili we loss many shingles and needed to have the roof done again. Ok, here is my question...Are you suppose to see nails coming out through the inside of the attic? I opended the attic door and wood chips were everywhere and I could see nails coming out. Is this normal?

Yep, that's pretty normal. The roof sheathing is pretty thin and the nails usually go thru. Just be sure they use as many nails per shingle as specified in the new hurricane/wind requirements for your area.

Building codes actually require full penetration of the sheathing by the roof nails.

The reason is that the resistance to pullout is determined by the amount of wood displaced by the nail.
