Safety may be our first concern, but comfort is a close second. The best workwear and safety equipment of 2026 come with all the safety certifications for workplace compliance and are so comfortable you’ll actually want to wear them.

Our top picks this year include a hooded sun shirt that also keeps bugs away, lightweight boots that fit like your favorite hikers, a headlamp with double the support, a breathable sun shirt that eliminates the need for a safety vest, and waterproof work boots with cushy insoles and extra ankle support.

Working outdoors in the summer comes with the dual threats of sun exposure and heat-related illness. Milwaukee WorkSkin shirts are made of sweat-wicking fabric that enhances evaporative cooling while providing an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating of 50-plus, blocking the vast majority of the sun’s rays. Plus, they have a generous cut and 4-way stretch to move with you as you work, and a hood that fits under a hard hat or cap for added ear and neck protection.

WorkSkin shirts are available in six colors (gray, red, black, hi-vis yellow, orange, or sandstone). The one we tested was gray. The shirt felt comfortable and retained just enough moisture to stay cool without feeling soaked. The humid, weedy, buggy location also revealed some unexpected strong points: briars didn’t snag the thin shirt as much as we expected, and mosquitoes were less attracted to our tester than to others on site.

Red Wing IronFlex safety-toe boots are certified by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International) for protection and all-day comfort in punishing work environments. They are waterproof, feature a non-metallic safety toe, and meet certification standards for slip resistance and electrical hazards.

We were most impressed by the immediate level of comfort. No break-in time was necessary for a perfect fit, and the 6-inch uppers provided excellent ankle support. We also appreciated the welted heel combined with a cemented sole at the forefoot. This design gives the boot a perfect balance of stability and flexibility for tasks that require frequent bending and stooping.

Headlamps are great for working in the dark, but Ryobi’s new USB Lithium Magnetic LED Headlamp is even better. It features a detachable IP54 dustproof and waterproof lamp that can be mounted on a metal rack, car hood, or breaker box for even greater hands-free flexibility. The 2 amp-hour lithium battery provides up to 24 hours of runtime per charge and is equipped with a two-way charging port, allowing it to double as a portable power bank.

The lamp felt heavy, but the dual strap system held it securely in place in testing. It easily accommodated bending, climbing, and looking in all directions without moving out of place and provided bright wide-area illumination or spotlighting. After we depleted the battery, we clocked its recharging time at exactly 1.5 hours. With its detachable design, all-day battery life, and quick recharging time, this headlamp earns its keep well beyond dark jobsites.

Danner Wheat Ridge boots look more like hiking boots than work boots, which makes sense. They were built on Danner’s Trailguard ESS platform, which is known for stability on unstable surfaces. These waterproof boots have non-marking soles and meet ASTM certification standards for safety toe, oil and slip resistance, and electrical hazards.

The springy feel of the cushioned insoles balanced the reinforced sole nicely. The aluminum toe carries the same safety certification as steel, but felt lighter and less bulky. We liked the mid-height because it provided some ankle support while allowing a bit more freedom of movement than taller boots. Traction was good on smooth concrete and muddy trails, but mud didn’t build up on the soles. The Wheat Ridge boot proves that protection and comfort aren’t mutually exclusive.

High-visibility safety apparel (HVSA) vests boost visibility in high-traffic areas, but they trap air in hot weather. Ergodyne Chill-Its Hi-Vis shirts have you covered. These evaporative cooling shirts feature segmented reflective tape that boosts visibility without compromising the stretch of the fabric. They also include mesh vent panels under the arms and across the back to maximize airflow and provide UPF 50-plus sun protection.

The comfortable, stretchy, low-profile fit felt much better than wearing a safety vest over a work shirt. The cooling effect was the same regardless of the moisture source–whether it was sweat, rain, or a hose. Even in humid conditions, the evaporative effect made hot summer weather more bearable.
