Home technology is getting smarter every year, but the gadgets that impress us most aren’t always the ones with the longest lists of bells and whisltes. As we vetted and tested dozens of products for BobVila.com’s 2026 Tool of the Year, we looked for products that use technology to solve real problems—whether that means providing purified hot water without plumbing, monitoring indoor air, or keeping a home powered during an outage.
The following five stood out for making everyday life easier, safer, or more convenient without adding unnecessary complications. We also found several other clever products that didn’t quite crack our top five but still deserve recognition, and we’ve included those hardworking tools below.
Waterdrop M6H Instant Hot Reverse Osmosis System

The Waterdrop M6H received top honors because it brings reverse-osmosis (RO) filtration to places where installing an under-sink system just isn’t practical. We tested it for several weeks and loved being able to fill the tank, push a button, and get purified water without changing any plumbing. That makes it particularly useful for rentals, home offices, workshops, hobby rooms, and other spaces where access to a dedicated filtered-water faucet may be limited.
Plus, there’s the instant hot water, which quickly became one of our favorite features. The M6H dispenses at five preset temperatures ranging from room temperature to 203 degrees Fahrenheit, so we could make tea, coffee, cocoa, or oatmeal without waiting for a kettle. Its seven-stage RO filtration is NSF/ANSI 58 and 372 certified, and a detachable 40-ounce glass pitcher makes it easy to bring filtered water to the table or tuck it into the refrigerator.
Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro

The Govee Permanent Outdoor Lights 2 Pro is a rare combination of a simple DIY installation and an impressive result. The adhesive backing held each light in place while we positioned it and drove the permanent fasteners, which took much of the frustration out of lining up a long run beneath the roof eaves. The system also connected easily with the Govee app, and we were soon experimenting with a huge selection of scenes, colors, and effects.
These aren’t just Christmas lights that happen to stay up all year. Govee offers 100 preset scenes, adjustable white light from an ultra-warm 1000K to a crisp 10000K, and a new dual-layer lighting effect that can display two colors from a single light. The light strands are also cuttable and extendable to accommodate different rooflines, and the light modules themselves carry an IP68 weather-resistance rating. We like being able to switch from holiday colors to subtle architectural lighting without climbing a ladder.
GermGuardian AirSafe XL Smart Air Purifier

We’ve tested plenty of air purifiers, but the GermGuardian AirSafe XL stood out for giving us crucial information as well as filtration. We liked being able to monitor indoor air quality and operate the purifier from the Aria for Home app, where we could change fan speeds, set timers, check filter life, and see real-time air-quality readings without walking over to the unit.
The AirSafe XL is designed for large spaces, and GermGuardian rates it to clean all the air in rooms up to 1,680 square feet once per hour. Its four-stage system combines a fabric prefilter, activated carbon, high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filtration, and optional UV-C treatment. An IntelliSense sensor checks air quality 60 times per minute and can automatically adjust fan speed as conditions change. With 10 speed settings, we were able to dial down for quieter operation or ramp up when needed. The combo of strong filtration and easy app control made it one of our favorite new smart-home products.
Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect+ 26kW Home Generator

Unlike most of this year’s winners, we evaluated the Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect+ 26kW primarily on its specifications rather than hands-on testing of this exact model. We have, however, tested a similar Briggs & Stratton standby generator in the past, and this latest version builds on an already impressive whole-home backup system. With 26kW of running power on liquid propane and 24kW on natural gas, it’s designed to keep major household loads—including a large central air conditioner—running when utility power goes down.
Several refinements caught our attention. The commercial-grade Vanguard engine is designed for demanding continuous operation, while front-facing exhaust directs fumes away from the home and allows more flexibility in where the unit can be installed. Briggs & Stratton also added EnergyTrak remote monitoring for checking generator status around the clock, along with enhanced weather protection around the enclosure. A seven-year limited warranty rounds out a premium standby system designed for homeowners who don’t want an outage dictating what stays powered.
Lectron 4000A Car Battery Jump Starter

A jump starter has only one job that matters: getting a vehicle running when its battery won’t turn over. We put the Lectron 4000A Car Battery Jump Starter to the test on a dead car battery, and it did exactly what we wanted. It got the engine started without requiring another vehicle or a set of traditional jumper cables. Its compact size makes it much easier to keep in a trunk.
There’s quite a bit more packed inside. Lectron rates the unit at 4,000 amps of peak starting power for 12-volt vehicles with gas engines up to 10 liters or diesel engines up to 8 liters, and its True 0V mode is designed to start deeply discharged batteries. The 20,000 milliampere-hour internal battery doubles as a power bank with 60-watt USB-C charging, while a digital display and smart clamps provide battery information and built-in safety protections. It’s one of those gadgets we hope not to need but would much rather have on hand when we do.
