6 Unorthodox DIY Christmas Trees

Nothing beats a fresh-cut, pine-smelling Christmas tree that’s been decorated with care….

Unless you’re an allergy or asthma sufferer who can’t live with the spores and histamines. Or you’re an apartment dweller with no room for a full-fledged blue spruce. Or maybe you’re like me and, in your house, one tree is never enough!

This year, whatever your motivation, have a go at making your own non-traditional Christmas tree. Here are six amazing examples, all created from supplies you can pick up at your local home center.

1. LIGHT TREE

This light tree is nothing more than a few strings of basic miniature lights that have been strung back and forth between small pins. The effect? Amazing.

2. A-FRAME LADDER TREE

The A-frame ladder tree is a DIY classic. Here, home furniture and accessories retailer CB2 shows you its take, complete with lights and ornaments.

3. TREE MOBILE

My friend Megan came up with this brilliant idea: a DIY tree mobile, made exclusively from ornaments and monofilament (fishing line). Genius.

4. CHALKBOARD TREE

This chalkboard tree from Canadian House & Home is easy enough to re-create. Snag a canvas drop cloth from the hardware store, cover it with chalkboard paint, and then hang with a dowel or curtain rod. Once the holidays are over, replace your image with whatever works for the season.

5. MINIMALIST TREE

This minimalist tree is made from… (drumroll)… you guessed it! Shipping pallets. They’re free if you play your cards right, and they can become nearly anything. Disassemble, cut, nail. Done.

6. CHARLIE BROWN-INSPIRED TREE

And lastly, there’s this guy, the Charlie Brown-inspired tree. Make one, make a dozen.
