I have a quote for finishing the basement from owens corning for$32,000(Basic finishing with a discount). Mold is a big issue in this when thinking dry wall. Even though corning sounds great, why would any one use dry wall if it was so unsuitable for a basement. I am confused. Cost is certainly an issue. Is it worth spending that much? How can I keep the cost down while keeping it safe.

I couldn't determine the size of your basement from the message but $32,000 should remodel a good sized basement depending upon what they are starting with. On the the surface it doesn't sound like much of a discount. If you have a damp basement or flowing water, a lot of money could be spent on water control.

No mater what finish material you use, the basement should be completely dry. If moisture, humidity, or flowing water is present, it must be stopped OUTSIDE before reaching the basement walls. Coatings on the inside of the basement walls aren't very effective because the water in the masonry "pushes" the coating off with an amazing amount of pressure. The result is flaking paint and mold/mildew. The best solutions are exterior drainage control using gravel and deep french drains along with commercial grade coatings on the EXTERIOR of the basement walls. Some solutions include a separate finished wall standing off of the masonry wall and ventilation between. Drywall (gypsum board) is a very good finish product but can be easily damaged by moisture and mildew but so can masonry and other products.

Owens Corning is a manufacturer of insulation and roofing products. As far as I know, they are NOT in the business of construction. If someone is calling themselves Owens Corning, they may be misrepresenting who they are and I would be very cautious in dealing with them. I would ask for a list of clients they have done work for along with telephone numbers. Call and vist several of their completed jobs and ask the owners how they liked the work. If they can't provide at least 5 that you can actually get on the phone, look for another contractor.

OC make a basement finish "system" that is only sold through franchise installers.

There are other option such as using "paperless" drywall. It uses fiberglass instead of paper and won't support mold.

But if you properly detail the basement moisture should not be a problem.
