I just bought a house that has a finished garage. I am wanting to install garage door openers on the doors. I went out to ***** and bought a new Craftsman 1/2 HP opener and started the installation. When I got to the part about putting it up on the cieling, I found a problem. The space from the front of my garage to the finished ductwork is 10', and my garage door opener is 10' 4" long. What should I do????? The opener needs to be flush with the ceiling. Should I search for a short door opener or can you modify the rail length to make it fit??

I believe it would be safe to shorten the rail by 4" - but don't cut it in the middle - cut one end. If I remember right, the end that attaches to the wall above the door would only require one hole to be drilled if you shorten that end.
Then you adjust the electrical stops to match, using the screw adjustments on the unit.
