I'm trying to find a source for a definition of what a 1/2 story is. We're planning a house remodel and our township's height restriction is 2 1/2 stories but they do not define what 1/2 a story is. Thanks!

Uku, while I'm not sure of this I'd have to guess that a half story would refer to an attic. For example a two story house with an attic could be qualified as actually being 2 stories of living space with a half story of storage/venting/access area. Like I said, I cannot be certain of this definition, but maybe some of the others (DR HOME, KANSAZ, Etc.) will provide a more definitive answer.

Uku, In my county the height restriction is 25 feet above grade. At 10 feet per story, 25 feet is 2 1/2 stories. My county also requires that the finished floor is 12 inches above grade, I believe that only leaves 24 feet. Hope this helps.

My guess is that a half story would refer to a split level situation where a floor is only set partially underground. This story is not considered a basement but is actually lower than the entry level. Its only a guess but that's what I first thought of.

A half story has nothing to do with hight it's the square footage of floor space.
To make it simple: half as much space. Most bungalos and Cape cods are 1 1/2 stories tall. This usuallly means four to 6 LARGE rooms on the 1st floor with 3 to four SMALL rooms upstairs.
