My 1920's bungalow currently has two stone archways between the foyer/family room/dining room. Unfortunately, at some point they were painted white numerous times. Is there any way to restore these stone arches? I've been told that because stone is porous, you cannot get the paint off. Any suggestions?

Have you tried removing a little bit of the paint in an inconspicuous spot with paint remover? It might not be as bad as you've heard. It will probably take quite a bit of "elbow grease" and patience with a hard wire brush when removing the paint from the mortar between the stones.

Try not to make dust because the coats of paint might have lead since your house is pretty old.
