Hi,
We've a monkey butt ugly metal fireplace (wood burning) which works fine, but is an eyesore. It's made of metal, attached to the wall, and has an opening full on the front, then halfway open on each side.
I'd like to build a simple box surround, floor to ceiling, and keep it functional - though probably not very efficient.
Can anyone help me with suggestions for tackling this project?

You might want to hire a local contractor that is familiar with your local codes. Another thing that needs to be looked into is the type of fireplace and the required clearances before you build anything. It is important to maintain the proper clearances to various materials to maintain the proper fire rating.
This may not be the best job for a do-it-yourselfer. Safety when altering an existing fireplace enclosure is extremely important.
