when my washing machine empties the water backs up in the 11/4 inch copper standpipe. I have opened this drain and flushed it with a garden hose with no problem. I have tried an adapter that is supposed to stop this backrush but it still splashes back on the walls and floor. Short of increasing the drain size, any ideas ?

I don't have an answer, but a couple of questions might help. Has anything changed recently? Did you get a new washer? It sounds like your washer has a powerful pump. If so, did you have another washer that worked OK before this one?
If you've had this washer awhile, and the problem just started, I'd look elsewhere. Your water hose probably can't produce as high a flow of water as the washer is producing, so the problem still might be in the drain. You might try "snaking" it.
