I have a horrible, sewer gas smell that comes and goes in the house. It will last a couple days then go away for a month or so. No one can figure it out. Everything is draining fine. I did have a sump pump put in a few months ago but it is working fine and was put in by a professional. I didn't notice the smell until a few months after the sump pump was put in. The smell seems to be coming from, and is worse, in the back of the lavatory where the wall is cut out a little. I have lived her 28 years and never had this problem. I am on a septic system and I had the guy out to see if the septic tank needed emptied - it said it did not. I have seen a lot of posts on your website regarding the same question but I could not access the answers. I have 3 questions:

1. What could this smell be coming from and how do you fix it? (That's 2, sorry)

2. It is dangerous or unhealthy in any way?

3. How can I access the answers to the questions I see posted on your site.

Thank you.

Not sure what good it would do to post a reply as to how to view BBS trees since the OP states he can't seem to view replies in the first place.

Maybe one of the moderators can email him?

If tthis all began after the installation of the sump pump, I would say that who ever put it in tied the discharge into the sewage line. That is not a legal move. Not only will it overload your distribution system, but a sump pump is not a trapped fixture. You may be experiencing a dry sump when you smell the sewer gas. The sump discharge should be an independant discharge to the outside and not tied into the main sewage. Check and see how it is discharged.
