Recently I replaced several switches in my mobile home with dimmers, mostly with the cheap variety Leviton with the round knob, push on and off. While I've used these dimmers for many years now, I noticed a strange occurrence in the kitchen. I heard a high-pitch whine while the sink light was on and when I turned it off, the whine stopped. I turned it on again, and there was the whine once again. I opened up the switch and the whine is nonexistent. Is anybody familiar with this phenomenon? By the way, the switch box is only 4" away from a GFI if that makes any difference. I also left a message with Leviton customer support which they should be answering some time this morning.

- Leviton hum
The Leviton agent returned my call. Apparently the hum or whine is intrinsic with dimmers and there is little that can be done about it although he did suggest changing out the bulbs to heavy-duty,rough surface rated bulbs. The dimmer causes the filament in the bulb to vibrate so a heavy-duty bulb might take care of this. Funny, though I'm no master, I do have 4 or 5 years experience in the electrical trade and have never heard of nor experienced this phenomenon. I guess you're never too old to learn.
