I need to stain a project extra dark without going black. I have tried minwax ebony, dark walnut, and a walnut jel stain. The color is about right until I wipe off the excess stain. then it becomes too light. I am using oak wood. help please.

Hi.......what you need to try is called an NGR (non-grain raising) stain. They are alcohol based - and are very strong. You can obtain deep dark colors with them.

Having said that - I have not seen an NGR for years and years.

You will have to try a paint store (those on this site who love "paint stores" will love hearing me recommend!)

SW would likely have one (they used to) - you could also try a furniture re-finishing shop. NGRs are very common in commercial cabinetry.

Good luck with will love the results!

You may want to try McCloskey Gel Stain as I have seen it go very dark. You will have to experiment with how long to leave it on to get the desired results.

I have left the stain on without wiping it and achieved good results. It just takes longer to dry: sometimes weeks to eliminate any "tacky" feeling. (I did it on ceiling beams, so the extended dry time was not a problem for me.)
