Our house was built in 1825, and has heart-pine flooring under carpet in the original rooms. I would like to pull up the carpet and have the floors refinished. I got a reasonable estimate from a professional who came highly recommended, but he said we would have problems replacing boards if there was any rot. The planks are very wide and thick and the problem would be matching them. I know there are lots of restored homes across the county, and there must be a solution for this problem (and please don't say replace the carpet!). Any suggestions? Thanks!

Hi -
I've just finished refinishing my heart pine floors - and you are going to be delighted. They are just beautiful - a real asset. In my search to find out all I could about how to refinish the floors, I discovered some heart pine salvagers right in my general neighborhood. I did not need to replace any planks, but they were so helpful! I'm sure they would solve any problems you encounter. Here's their aptly named link: www.heartpine.com
