What to Consider When Choosing the Best Samsung Refrigerator

Choosing a refrigerator can feel overwhelming, but narrowing down a brand can help greatly in your search. Even once you’ve decided on a Samsung fridge, there are still plenty of models to choose from. The best refrigerator for each home can vary widely based on a household’s needs and finances, so we’ve rounded up the best Samsung refrigerators with a few categories in mind. When shopping for a Samsung fridge, consider the following aspects: door style, size, capacity, energy efficiency, and additional features.

Door Style

Fridges are generally categorized into a few types, based on door style. These include French door, side by side, top freezer, bottom freezer, and four-door. Beyond these broad fridge types, Samsung also has two special features built into some fridges: a Food Showcase design and a FlexZone section.

  • French door fridges have two side-by-side upper fridge doors and a bucket-style bottom freezer. This style is popular partially due to its trendy look, but it happens to be convenient as well, thanks to an easy-to-access layout and requiring less space for their doors to swing open. Some folks don’t care for a bucket-style freezer, which can be harder to keep organized. A few Samsung models have split bottom freezers (two stacked freezer drawers) to help with organization.
  • Side by side refrigerators have a fridge and freezer section located next to each other, with a full-length door for each. This convenient design means users needn’t bend down to access each side (except to reach the bottom shelf, of course). These fridges offer ample shelving and freezer space, though they cannot accommodate very  wide items due to the off-center split that divides the appliance vertically.
  • Top freezer fridges have a freezer compartment above the main compartment. While this classic style may look a little less modern and trendy, it’s still hugely popular, with 40 percent of full-size fridges purchased in 2021 being top freezer models. They’re among the most affordable and compact refrigerator types, though they usually lack upscale features and users must bend to reach the lower shelves.
  • Bottom freezer fridges have a freezer compartment below the main upper fridge section, which has a single door. Unlike top freezers, which are shelved, this design has a bucket-style freezer. These fridges keep fresh food at eye level, but users must bend to access the freezer, which some users find challenging to organize. Samsung has few bottom freezer fridges (and several highly rated picks in other fridge types), so we’ve omitted bottom freezer fridges from our lineup in favor of other better fridge models.
  • Four-door refrigerators, which are relatively new, feature four equal-size doors that house a full-width refrigerator on top and two half-width sections on the bottom. One bottom section is usually a freezer, while the other may be a freezer, fridge, or flexible compartment that can be used as either a fridge or a freezer.

FlexZone is Samsung’s version of a convertible freezer/fridge section, where users have the flexibility to set that section’s temperature within a wide range to use it as either a freezer or a fridge. Samsung includes this feature in several of its models.

The Food Showcase feature is essentially a door-in-door design in some Samsung fridges. With two sections, this feature gives users the option to open a front panel to access a “showcase” section (essentially the in-door shelving of traditional fridges, with access through the front instead of by opening the door) or open the entire door to reach the main fridge section. This feature is useful for storing grab-and-go items like condiments, milk, butter, and beverages. The front panel access makes it quick and easy to reach often-used items without opening the entire fridge and letting cold air out.

Capacity and Depth

A refrigerator’s capacity is a measure of its interior food storage area. It is measured in cubic feet (cu. ft.) and can range from around 10 to over 30 cu. ft. for full-size fridges. Each adult typically needs between 4 to 6 cu. ft. of fridge space (and it doesn’t hurt to have extra for parties and holidays). For a typical family of four, most households will want a 20 cu. ft. fridge, at minimum.

Standard refrigerators typically range from 32 to 36 inches deep (including the handles), while countertops usually measure around 25 inches deep. Due to the difference in depths, standard fridges will stick out from the countertops. Shoppers looking for a more built-in look should consider a counter depth fridge instead.

Counter depth refrigerators are shallower than their standard counterparts, up to around 30 inches deep (which accounts for 24 to 25 inches for the fridge box, plus the door and handles), so they sit more flush with the counters. The extra inches account for the space the door needs to open. Samsung manufacturers various counter depth fridges, many of which measure about 28⅞ inches deep overall. Make sure to account for ventilation space (about 2 inches in the back) when measuring for a new fridge.

Energy Efficiency

Modern refrigerators are more energy efficient than ever due to stricter regulations as well as incentivization from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Energy Star program.  Energy Star is an EPA-run program that evaluates the energy efficiency of appliances, certifying machines that meet its energy standards. Looking for Energy Star certification is the easiest way for consumers to determine if the fridge is an energy efficient choice. All of the best Samsung fridges on this list are Energy Star certified.

Samsung refrigerators have a few different cooling types to improve efficiency and flexibility. Twin Cooling systems are found in some of Samsung’s side by side models. This system uses two separate evaporators and fans to effectively maintain the fridge and freezer temperature independently of each other, allowing each section to maintain optimal temperature and humidity. Twin Cooling Plus is an enhanced version of the same technology, with a three-way valve to improve air flow synchronization between the two sections.

Samsung’s Triple Cooling is similar, but with three instead of two independent cooling systems to optimize temperature and humidity control in each compartment. Samsung’s Metal Cooling feature utilizes a stainless steel fridge interior to better retain cold air and maintain temperature.

Additional Features

Water dispensers and ice makers are common features in modern higher-end fridges. These devices are incredibly convenient and a huge draw for many shoppers, dispensing filtered water (cold, room temperature, or hot) and ice at the press of a button.

Consider if this feature is worth the extra cost for your household. According to Wirecutter’s survey of household refrigerator satisfaction, the ice maker was one of the most problem-prone features in home refrigerators, so it warrants proper research when shopping for a new fridge (the survey also  found that most people found an ice maker to be worthwhile).

A crowd-favorite feature is the Family Hub, a tablet built right into the door of some Samsung fridges. This screen functions much like a tablet and smart home hub, allowing users to stream music, share photos, watch shows, leave notes, search recipes, control smart appliances, use Amazon Alexa voice assistant, and more.
