Bob Vila Radio: Cabinet Knobs

Looking for a quick upgrade to your kitchen? Consider replacing the hardware.

Replacing cabinet hardware is an easy and inexpensive way to give your kitchen a little facelift. But even a quick fix like this requires some planning.

First, consider styles and finishes. Classic hardware styles work well with traditional cabinets, and modern kitchens call for sleek designs. But rules are made to be broken, so don’t be afraid to make a unique statement. Do, however, consider the finishes of your appliances, faucets, and lighting. They don’t have to match, but they should work together. You probably don’t want bright chrome pulls if you have a bronze faucet.

If you’re replacing pulls, measure the distance between the centers of the existing screw holes, and make sure your new pulls are the same size.

Count—and recount—the number of pulls and knobs you’ll need, so you’re not caught short. Consider buying a few extras in case you need a replacement one day and discover that the style has been discontinued.

Finally, remember that cabinet knobs are magnets for grime. If you’re a picky housekeeper, avoid delicate finishes and deep crevices.
