We are planning to replace our over 20 years old gutter. Our current gutter is directly nailed on the rafter without fascia board. Adding new fascia board will cost us additional $1500. We will do it, however, if the fascia board is very necessary. Please give us suggestion and comment. Thanks
What style house is this? As some houses do not have a facia board.
Is the attic open to the outside without the facia board?

If the house has exposed rafters showing on the overhang, then you don't have a fascia board on that type of house.
Hope this helps out.

Your design allows for wood gutters that need to dry evenly on both sides. A metal gutter doesn`t have the strength on the back to support ice or ladders ect. ect. A fascia board can be added but will need to be angled cut to follow the pitch or it will dissappear cuz of the pitch. Too big of a fascia will obstruct the windows.
You could hang the gutter from the roofing with aluminum hangers and stainless steel screws on the rafters only. If you choose to hang them,..make sure to paint or SEAL the rafter ends.

Oh ,...I forgot to mention,..You wont get the fascia behind the dripedge if there is dripedge. Also,..I see too much gutter without a drain pipe up top in the photo.
Yes, our house has exposed rafters and we currently do not have fascia board. But some other house with exposed rafters nearby do have fascia board. Shall we add new fascia board when we install the new gutter or leave the way it is now by screwing the gutter directly onto the rafters?
OddBall, you are right about we do not have enough drain pipe. We will add more when we install the new gutter.
Thanks.
