My husband and I are in the process of purchasing an 88 year old victorian style home. The people who live there now have done a great job of attempting to restore it. What I assume are the original Pocket Doors and Woodworking are there.

However, some moron painted over all of the wood. What was particularly distressting was the gorgeous banister in the foyer. Either the people who live there were in the process of stripping it or they were in the process of painting it (tho, why they would want to is beyond me).

We want to strip the banister and its vertical posts. I believe that the base is painted too. Only, this is our first home, and I don't know where to begin. I am not sure whether we should remove the banister and do it piece by piece, or leave it in place and do it all at once. I thought I saw a show that illustrated how to take it apart and put it back together. Any suggestions? We don't even know what the wood underneath is!! How can we tell?

hi Jess
I too had a bannister that was extremely ugly. However I would not recommend removing the bannister. If you are absolutely certain it will go back on as easily as it comes apart do so. Otherwise leave it where it is. To strip my bannister I used an ordinary paint stripper on the actual bannister itself since there was only 2 layers of paint and I used Peel-Away#7 for the spindles since there was at least 10 layers (I could see lots on different colors on chipped paint). Peel-Away #7 can be bought at a Sherman Williams paint store or even some Home Depot's. You can alos check your local hardware store as well. Note that there are several kinds of Peel Away. I recoomend #7 especially if you plan to stain the wood, some versions will "burn" the wood as they are stronger. I used this with great success and I hope it will work for you as well.
