We have a house built in the 1970's and there is a drain in the floor of the laundry room located in the basement.

The drain periodically lets off horrid smells. There is water in it, we often run water down the drain but that doesn't seem to help the smell at all.

Can someone help me out with some advise? Its really gross.

Unless proper testing is performed, it would just be a stab in the dark. Odor can be caused by bacteria in the water, dead animals, methane, fungi or a combination.

Do you know if this drain is hooked up to your sewer system?

It is directly hooked up to the sewer. In fact, when we got there we removed some illegal drainage the previous owners had hooked up causing the washer and a tin shower to drain directly into the floor drain and thus the sewer system untreated.

Having exposed sewer lines can be dangerous to your health. You should consult with a plumber.
