I Just Erected A 12x8 Oversized Barn Shed In My backyard - I Am Going To Be Placing Sensitive Items In It For Storage.

I Need Advice - PLEASE!

???The Frame Is Wider Then The Insulation - I was advised to use an R13 insulation that is completely wrapped in plastic - how do I make up for the exposed room? And without compressing it how do I hold it in place?

???Ceiling Insulation - should I do anything special when insulating the ceiling of the shed?

???Climate Control - any easy and effecient ways of climate controlling this shed to save my items?

I'd appreciate any help you can offer - THANKS!

If your studs are placed at a standard spacing (12, 16, or 24 inch centers) then insulation can be purchased that will properly fit between them with just enough side pressure to seal the joint. At locations with odd widths or heights, the insulation can be cut with a sharp knife. I assume that you are asking about batt type insulation. I recommend batt insulation with a vapor rertarder on one side.

My opinion is that totally sealed insulation is not very feasible since you can't cut it without destroying the seal and if any moisture becomes trapped inside, it can't easily migrate out thus exposing the insulation to the possibility of mold and mildew. If you are storing really valuable stuff and are concerned about mold and mildew, a shed without climate control is not a good choice. Whatever climate control you use, remember that the main objective is moisture control, not temperature (other than not falling below 35 degrees or above 90).

Use R-13 in the walls and R-19 to R-30 in the ceiling. If there is an attic space above the ceiling, make sure it is ventilated. Attic insulation can be batts or blown in.
