I have an electric garage door opemer. when I press the button once to close the door, it colses all the way & opens by itself immediately. What casuses the door to open by it self?

KSumathi - hi, does your system have sensor lights down near the bottom of the door tracks? If so, have you checked to see if anything is blocking the beam between the sensors? If that's okay, and the windows on the sensors aren't covered with dust/cobwebs, it sounds like your DOWN stop needs adjusting.

Depending on the type of opener you have, there should be a knob for adjusting the UP and DOWN limits. When they get out of adjustment, the opener's safety mechanism (it prevents the door from crushing something in its path and the motor from burning up) takes over and sends the door the opposite direction.

You'd need to be able to adjust the knob while the door's in motion, so be safe as you work with it. The owner's manual should describe the procedure for you. Basically, as soon as the door closes and then starts to open, you'd adjust the DOWN knob to halt the door. If the door's not completely closed, you can adjust the knob in the opposite direction a small amount (like 1/4-turn) and try the door again.

If you have a system that uses magnets and doesn't have the adjustment knobs, you'd need to reposition the magnet that senses when the door's closed. You'd have to move it towards the motor and away from the door.

I hope this helps you - good luck! Jim D/West Point, VA
