These are the storm windows that have an aluminum frame screwed directly on the outside of the window frame, and the screen and glass panels slide up and down, depending on the season. Over the years the panels have become damaged (bent screen, cracked glass). Can I buy and insert the replacement panels myself, and what are sources for that? Since my house is over 80 years old, will I have trouble finding sizes (the current storms are about 20 years old). Is replacing the inserts cheaper than having a contractor replace the entire thing -- aluminum frame and insert panels? Thank you.

Those date from the 60's or later.

In most cases each panel will come out. Move the "clips" (that you release to to move the section up or down) in and lower it and pull it out. The top will relase either by twisting the panel or by moving it to apoint where there is a notch in the frame.

Most hardware stores and glass companies can replace the glass and screens.

Many of them can make new frames also.

Do you mean to take the insert frames and have someone replace the glass or screen in those frames? I was hoping to replace the entire insert frame, not just the glass and screen that goes into them, for some of these. I should have been more specific -- some of the inserts' structure has been damaged. Those little tab/hook things get bent, and the frames also get bent.

Basically I'm wondering whether it's just cheaper to start over with everything. Or, how much of a savings would it be to replace the glass in an insert?

Thanks for your help.

I ment to replace the glass or screens in the existing inserts.

But I think most of those parts are standard, extrusions, corners, and fittings. They just cut to fit.

Don' know of the relative cost, but probably depends on what percentage needs replacing.
