I replaced the gear wheel (White plastic) in my Sears Craftsman (1/2 HP) garage opener. Now when I try to open it It just opens the door about 4 inches and then just closes itAny suggestions please

THANKS, The garage opens fine without the opener. Without the chain the gear turns probably 1/10th of a turn clockwise and then stops and turns 1/10th counter clockwise.

First, verify that the door will manually open properly without the opener. It may have developed a bind. Then try running the opener without the door attached. If it fails, then you're gonna have to open up the unit again and look for a problem inside. I think that gear comes with a picture of the parts, in order. Make sure they're put together right.
One thing is odd. Usually, when the opener detects a problem while opening, it should just stop without closing. Could one of the limit switches have gotten messed up? Take a good look at those if you have to open the unit again. Good luck.

you may have unknowingly moved your limmit switch settings.these switches shut off the motor in the up & down possition.by watching the switch you'll see if adjustments need to be made.
