I have a single story house with no basement. A few times I've noticed water backing up into my bath tub when the washing machine drains. Also, about four weeks ago, during a very heavy rain storm, water backed up into the tub. I'm wondering whether a drain vent might be clogged or if there could be some other problem.

Most likely the drain itself is getting clogged. It may be the main. Certainly it is past the washing machine and bathtub connections. If you received backup after a rain that usually means you still have red clay sewer tile and surface water has gotten into it and it is partially clogged.

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure whate red clay sewer tile is. The backup after rain only occurred once after a very heavy rainfall (5-7 inches in an afternoon). A few years ago I noticed a similar backup when the snow melted, but never again. I'm not sure what red clay sewer tile is, but I'm on a septic system rather than sewer. Could it be a septic problem? A few months ago when the bathtub was clogged I mentioned the backup to the person cleaning the drain. He did some tests and said that it wasn't a septic problem. Any other advice you can offer would be helpful.

water backs in the tub when the garbage disposal is running.
