I am planning to replace the existing recessed cabinet with a 14" rough opening with one that has about a 30" rough opening. Assuming there are no pipes or wires to deal with, the new cabinet will span 2 - 2x6 studs. The cabinet will recess 3". Can I notch the studs? Is this a problem if they are load bearing studs? If so, how do I know if they are load bearing?

The vent stack will likely be adjacent to the old cabinet.

Beefing up the remainder of the studs with full length cripples should add enough strength to support the load of even a load bearing wall.
