I live at the end of a cul-de-sac in NJ and the salt and sand for the entire road get's plowed onto the front of my lawn. I would like to do a garden boarder across the entire front but am concerned about damage from the salt.

Are there any broad categories of plants that stand up to salt? I'm hoping to plant a couple of trees, some ornamental grasses, and "other stuff". Any thoughts/experiences would be appreciated.

Hi Peacefield, one plant family that comes to mind right away is mint. We have three different mints (orange, chocolate, regular) that are the toughest plants we've ever seen, heck they've even managed to choke off/kill some evergreen goundcover. But to get some better advise, try posting at Garden Web on their user's forum. The folks there are very knowledgable and helpful, and probably know more about plants than we do here. Good luck!
