I have taken up carpet and thinking about renting a sander to sand the old, bad condition hardwood floors, any suggestions would be helpful.

I think you're better off hiring someone. The sanders you rent are not as good as the one's they use and it is very easy to ruin your floor if you're not careful. We've had floors done for $400 per room.

Whether you hire a hardwood flooring company or if you do want to DIY then try using a circular sander.
