Can someone give me guidlines on wiring smoke detectors? Do they need to be on the same circuit for them to all sound if one trips, or is there some low watt wire that ties them together?

Thanks

Hi Ellis,
You'll need to purchase smoke detectors that are designed to be wired in tandem. It is suggested that smoke detectors have their own dedicated circuit. The signal wire which will connect each detector will need to be purchased separately. Most detectors include wiring diagrams but I would suggest you discuss your project fully with the supplier
because there are different options for wiring depending on what you are doing with the signal from the detector (ie;sending to a remote panel, sending to a main annunciator,or making all detectors sound in unison).

Smoke detectors should be wired together with 14-3 sheathed electrical cable wire. This is so they can all be powered and the extra wire will signal the others to sound should one sound. You should use smokes with a battery backup to provide protection during power failure. I like to wire them to a common lighting circuit for the simple fact that if there is a problem such as the circuit tripping you are aware of this because your lights are also off.
