Here's my story - very dark stairs going to a basement. Three way switch at the bottom and top of steps but the light fixture at the bottom of the steps doesn't provide adequate lighting. To solve my problem, I'm trying to tap into the three way switch at the top of the steps and place another light fixture near the top of the stairs. The three way switch has four wires - black, white, red, and ground. The light fixture has black and white. I've tried just about all combinations w/o luck. How can I get the light working?

Eddieah18,

You will need to tie your new light fixture into either the other switch box -OR- the existing light fixture. The switch box at the top of the steps does not seem to have a neutral (grounded conductor) in it. It is hard to say for sure without being there, but it probably would be best to tie in at the existing light fixture, assuming you can reach it and you don't exceed wire fill capacity of the boxes involved.

I hope this helps,
Jim
