Cracking sounds run all over the roof since redo in 5-01. Sounds seem to occur primarily when temperature changes occur..early a.m. sun and late afternoon shade. Few, if any, noises on cloudy, cool days.

Roof layers (inside -out):
1) cardecking
2) plywood..screwed into cardecking (part of house seismic upgrade.
3) thick sheet foam insulation.
4) plywood
5) 30 lb roofing paper
6) air space 2"
7) strong metal roofing..channeled, popfit.

Any help?? Excellent general contractor and roofing subcontractor!!

Hi Tom,

I believe this is easy. I'm sure it's the expansion and contraction of the metal roofing. It may be too 'tight', but then again, maybe that's how it's to be installed.

If you get no where w/your roofer, ctc. the Mfgr. for info on installation instructions. THEN, ask about the noise.

My best to ya and hope this helps.

PS: On warm days, the metal will expand and 'pop'. On cool days, the metal is contracted and, well ..., doesn't 'move' ...

Could it be that your plywood was installed to close together and is expanding/contracting?

Help!! Could it be the cardecking/plywood layer that has random 1 3/4 screws holding it together ( part of seismic upgrade) ???
