Our roof is the house's original, has had no problems though it is time to be replaced, and is at a somewhat shallow pitch. One contractor says it is not a problem to recover the roof with that pitch, while another says that we should tear off the existing roof because of the pitch. Is there any general rule about the point at which the pitch is shallow enough as to make a recover inadvisable? Many thanks for any insights you may have.

If you are using comp, you need at least a 2/12 pitch, you can recover up to the point of there being 3 layers of roofing on the roof.

Some contractors will not cover over old roofing for a number of reasons. It all comes down to price....do you want to pay for a tearoff, or just go over the existing?
