I have a patio (15'x20') tucked against the inside (South and West) portion of my L-shaped house. There is a back door where the patio is against the house. I need to raise the patio approx 12" at this point to get the ater to drain away from the house. The bricks are 24"x30". Should I use stones/crushed rocks to raise most of it and top that with sand? Should I be first laying down a sheet of plastic to stop water from seeping through the ground and into my basement? What angle should I have it tilted to drain water away from the house. I live in Canada and have quite a bit of snow during the winter.
