I found glued-on dark parquet rectangles over light oak(?) hardwood. I am wedging up the rectangles with all kinds of tools but how do I get off all the glue and little pieces of wood that's left

To remove the glue try a paint scraper. I used it on my hardwood floor when I removed the tiles that were glued to it. It worked better than sanding and it made the sanding much easier.

thanks for the info. Unfortunately, I pretty much destroyed the floor. Chunks of the wood came up and I ended up putting new floor down.
