I'm looking at getting my hardwood floors refinished. I just removed the carpeting in my house to find that the dining room has tarpaper over the red oak hardwood floors, and living room and stairs have just the red oak, fairly good condition. I've talked to several contractors, and only one of them is willing to tackle sanding the tarpaper off. The other two said they would only do it if I scrapped most of it off. The house is 50 years old, and I've heard tarpaper can have asbestos in it, so should I be worried that asbestos dust will be released during the sanding? Or should I try to use an adhesive remover, a scraper, and a lot of elbow grease?

Also, how long is it that you have to wait after the last coat of poly is applied until you can walk on it? How long till you can put furniture on it and until a dog and cat can walk over it? I've heard everything from 2 hours to 1 week.
