Well, we just had close to 3' of snow that fell in Mass. The snow has been building up on our roof. Last night I noticed that an icicle is hanging down BEHIND the gutters. Then to top it off...the roof in the living room started to leak. AUgh! Took a look and the gutter are FULL of ice, and the snow is backing up under the shingles!! We are going to begin to melt it tonight..(propane torch most likely) and shovel all the snow off the roof. So....does anyone know a way to prevent the gutters from filling up with ice and what can we do about the roof. Should we replace entire roof in the spring?

Jenniferw508 - hi, did you look down a few posts at one by ScottB505 called Leaking Roof? He had a reply from someone who suggested replacing some of the shingles with a steel plate. I'm not a roofer but the reply made sense...the sun warms the plate and that helps the snow/ice on it melt off.

Another thing I've seen advertised is Gutter Helmet - it's a cover that keeps debris out while letting only water in. Supposedly, it also prevents ice buildup and ice dams which can cause roof leaks. It's been discussed in this area of the BBS before - you should be able to do a search and find the info. Also, the big box stores sell various gutter covers (solid and screened) to keep leaves and debris out. The solid ones might help you some but again - I'm not a roofer.

As you're thawing out the gutters, check and make sure water flows to the downspouts properly, and that the downspouts aren't clogged with anything. That'll save other hassles in the future. Good luck! Jim D/West Point, VA

You have what is called an ice dam. They sell roof rakes for these kinds of problems, but as far as the leaking is conserned, make sure you roof has proper ventaltion so that your heating in the roof will help the ice dam melt. Also make sure you roof is air tight for best results.
