Do I have to use backerboard when putting ceramic tile on a wall? It is a small area 3'x5'.

I have seen tile adhered directly to Drywall, of course this cause a nightmare when it is removed.

If its a dry area then drywall is ok to use. Cement boards should be used in wet areas like a tub/shower surround with a plastic sheet behind them to block water penetration from getting to the wood studs.
